That Thursday Night
More frightened than she had ever been, and fearing she was experiencing the last moments of her life, the terrified woman sat strapped to the chair by what had to be several rolls of duct tape. There was also a small strip of it covering her mouth. She whimpered and cried beneath it as dark mascara ran down her face.
âShhhâ¦shhhâ¦shhhhâ¦â The crazed killer gave her false comfort as he approached from the front. A thin, razory cord stretched between his hands. She began panicking even more at the sight of it.
âDo you know why I chose you?â He asked as he moved around behind her. Purposefully dragging out the torment so he could marinate in her fear all the longer. âI picked you because I felt sorry for you.â
Her eyes cringed in confusion. She couldnât turn her head but cut her sight back as far as it would take her. She still couldnât see him, but knew he was there.
âI saw your picture in the paper.â He went on. Seemingly nonchalant about the whole thing. He was leaving her as puzzled as she was scared. âIt must have really hurt. Giving it everything you had and only being third runner-up.â
Her expression changed as she began to understand what he was talking about.
âPersonally, I think you were robbed.â He said, and sounded weirdly sincere. âThe crown should have been yours. You were, by far, the most beautiful woman on the stage. All those blondes and redheads.â He said with a sense of disgust. âSkanks, the lot of them. But not you, with your beautiful, long dark hair and big, brown eyes. The moment I saw you I knew you were a real doll.â He ran his hand through her hair and she pulled away in disgust as best she could. âYou should have been Ms. Texas. But, at last, life is not fair, is it?â
She tried to scream again, but those screams were muffled by the tape.
âYou should be happy and thanking me.â He spoke the words like she should be honored by what was happening. âIâm going to give you the chance to finally represent your state like the true work of art you are.â
With that, he slowly placed the lethal wire around her neck and began to pull and tighten it. She could feel it cutting into her flesh and the life being strangled out of her. She fought to live, but was helpless to do anything but die. Abruptly, and unexpectedly for both of them, the room echoed with the deafening boom of a single gunshot. It startled her even more and she could feel the wire loosen and fall from her throat.
Still confused and frightened, she gazed across the room to see Brennen standing at the doorway, gun in his hand. Not taking any chances, he gradually made his way towards her while keeping an eye on the Maniacâs body sprawled out on the floor. Reaching her, he carefully removed the tape from her lips.
âMy name is Special Agent Hal Brennen with the FBI.
